School of Dance
Long considered one of the foremost schools of dance on the African continent, the UCT School of Dance has a long and proud tradition of training dancers, teachers and choreographers.
Established in 1934 as the UCT Ballet School, it went on to serve as the training ground for many generations of South African ballet dancers. During the 1990s a shift in emphasis saw both African dance and contemporary dance being offered as full majors.
The influence of African dance can be seen both in student choreography, which displays an earthy fusion of African and other dance styles, and in teaching methods, which embody healthy cross-cultural influences.
Aside from offering a four-year BMus (dance) degree and a three-year Dance Teacher's Diploma, the School of Dance offers those in the surrounding community the opportunity to take evening dance classes.
The School of Dance complex also houses the rehearsal studios of Cape Town City Ballet, one of the few remaining professional ballet companies in South Africa.
