30 April 2011

AttendeesAssoc Prof Kirsten McKenzie (University of Sydney) & Prof Nigel Worden (University of Cape Town) with students from the Southern Crossings course

Associate Professor Kirsten McKenzie from the History Department at Sydney University visited the Department for three weeks in March-April 2011. Kirsten was a student at UCT before moving to Australia, and is now a leading advocate of transnational histories of the British Empire in the early-mid 19th century.

She gave a department seminar on her new book, A swindler's progress: nobles and convicts in the age of liberty (Harvard Univ. Press, 2010) and taught in the Department's Honours course, Southern Crossings: Australia and the Cape, 1750-1850. This course is jointly offered at the universities of Cape Town and Sydney, and Kirsten was at UCT while the co-convenor Nigel Worden taught the course in Sydney. This joint teaching opportunity was made possible by funding provided by the Worldwide Universities Network RMP.
