All logos are restricted from any type of manipulation.
The full UCT logo is, in fact, the sum of the crest combined with the words "University of Cape Town, iYunivesithi yaseKapa, Universiteit van Kaapstad".
This logo is sacrosanct and should not be altered in any way.
During the first quarter of 2006, and in response to the Council-approved language plan, a multi-lingual application of the UCT logo was developed to recognise the diversity of the university campus community and the multi-lingual context of the Western Cape.
English is the medium of instruction at UCT. However, the university's language policy advocates many languages of communication. It takes as its starting point the need to prepare students to participate fully in a multilingual society, where multilingual proficiency and awareness are essential. It also commits itself to ensuring that all students and staff have access to effective literacy in English. The language policy recognises our linguistic diversity as a resource, rather than a problem which resides in individuals. It also recognises the personal, social and educational value of multilingualism and of language development. This position reflects the university's stated institutional goals to:
- be a player in the global field while playing an active developmental and supportive role in its local African environment
- ensure meaningful access and success for students and staff from diverse backgrounds
- create an institutional culture where systems, processes, behaviour, symbols and rituals represent a diversity of culture
Looking at branding as a wider issue than just the use of the logo, we are really looking at UCT's "brandmark" in relation to its "corporate" identity. UCT's brandmark and its options, as outlined in these guidelines, were designed with a flexibility to meet different applications.
The university produces a wide range of communication materials. With scores of undergraduate and postgraduate programmers, and wide ranging administrative support for students such as student admissions/schools liaison, the International Academic Programmes Office, student services and the library, it is easy to understand the challenges of managing our identity.
For design flexibility, given the variety of sizes and formats of our communication materials, the brandmark is provided in two formats: Brandmark 1 (round) and Brandmark 2 (horizontal).
Brandmark 1 is the correct logo for the printed medium e.g. stationery, marketing, advertising and other communication materials.
Brandmark 2 should only be used when the format of the publication does not allow space for Brandmark 1 or in online applications such as websites.
The font used in the logo is a tweaked version of the Apple Mac properties for Futura T Demi. Character width is distorted to 95%, and the tracking amount is + 5%.
Any deviations on the use of the UCT multi-lingual logos (round or stacked) must have approval from the Marketing Officer or the Executive Director: Communications and Marketing Department.
