Registrar

Royston Pillay

Royston PillayRoyston Pillay was appointed university registrar effective from 1 January 2016.

The registrar is secretary to Council, Senate and Convocation and the head of the university’s academic administration. The registrar has overall responsibility for legal matters across the university and supports the executive officers, deans and heads of department across a wide range of internal structures and functions. The student admissions and systems support functions report to the registrar.

Pillay’s educational qualifications range from the humanities (social sciences, education, and politics) to organisational viability, systems thinking, strategy and values-based leadership. He has an established professional record that includes 18 years in higher education, all of which have been at UCT. He is an alumnus of UCT, having obtained his BA, HDE, BEd and executive MBA.

Pillay began his professional career as a teacher and deputy principal of Grassy Park High School on the Cape Flats. He joined UCT in 1997, where he has worked as head of the student affairs secretariat, faculty manager, director of student admissions, and director of the office of the vice-chancellor, prior to his appointment as registrar.

Pillay’s experience includes years of service on a number of UCT committees covering the spectrum of senior management, governance, strategy, operations and transformation, bringing together operational experience in student services, academic administration and institutional governance, with a strategic focus. He is a member of the national steering committee of Universities South Africa’s National Benchmark Test Project, a member of the International Education Association of South Africa, and a past UCT-nominated director on the board of the Sports Science Institute of South Africa.
