Application for funding
If you require financial assistance for your studies read this section carefully and refer to Section J of Application for Admission to Study form (Form 1: see Links on the right).
The closing date for 2013 financial aid applications - for students new to UCT: 31 October 2012.
Note that late application will not be considered.
UCT's financial assistance programme, intended to assist financially needy students who are assessed as eligible to receive financial assistance, is based on a partnership between the student, parent/guardian, the Government's Loan Scheme (NSFAS) and UCT. All parties to the partnership make a financial contribution towards the student's cost of study. Financial assistance will ordinarily be a combination of a bursary and loan.
The following questions will help to determine whether you are eligible to apply. You are eligible to apply for financial assistance if:
- You are a South African citizen or South African permanent resident
- You have no other tertiary qualification
- You are applying for an approved full-time undergraduate degree
How do I apply for financial assistance?
Online Application: If you are applying online, please ensure that you complete Section 9: Funding Application - to be consired for financial aid.
Paper Application: Complete Section J of the UCT’s “Application for Admission to Study” (Form 1) and Application for Financial Assistance (Form 9). Application for Financial Assistance (form 9) must be submitted together with your Application for Admission to Study (form 1).

Use the Checklist to ensure that you have provided all the information required in Section J of application Form 1.
- Have you indicated the number of adults in your family?
- Have you indicated the number of children/dependents in your family?
- Have you indicated the number of children that will be studying as a tertiary institution?
Your parent/guardian must complete the section on family financial details.
Ensure that you specify:
- Gross annual income of all working family members living at home
- Annual pension income
- Investment income
- Rental income
- Maintenance received
- The value of investments held
- The value of property and outstanding bonds
- The market value of motor vehicles
The application for financial assistance cannot be processed in cases where the above financial details are not declared on the application form.
What will UCT do with this information?
UCT will feed the details that you provide on the application form into the National Means Test in order to verify eligibility to receive financial assistance. All tertiary institutions are required to assess the eligibility of applicants to receive financial assistance. As of 2003 the National Means Test, as developed by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, is used to determine eligibility to receive financial assistance. Verification of eligibility is provisional at this stage.
What happens if I do not complete all the details in Section J of the application form?
Your application for financial assistance will not be considered. Please double-check that you have provided all the information that is required on the application form.
