Financial aid 2012 & 2013: Allowances

UCT financial assistance makes certain monetary allowances available to students. These allowances are paid directly into the student's bank account and are charged to the student's fee account. Should you not wish to receive these allowances, please notify the SFA in writing.

UCT residence and private accommodation allowance is intended primarily for students whose home address is outside of Cape Town.

Students whose home address is in Cape Town and who wish to stay in UCT residence or private accommodation must submit a written motivation to the SFA to have these costs covered. The SFA will make a decision to grant permission or not. If the motivation is unsuccessful, and the student moves into residence or private accommodation, the cost of these will be borne by the student. If the motivation is successful, then the student does not have to re-submit a motivation the following year.

Cost of catering residence

The cost of food is included in the total cost of the accommodation. Reducing your meal option will not reduce your EFC.

Self-catering residence

Where a student lives in a self-catering residence, an annual amount of R11 000 will be made available for food. This covers the 10 months of the academic year. The food allowance of R1 100 per month will be paid directly to the student's bank account.

Private Accommodation

Students have to make their own arrangements to cover the cost of deposits.

Allowances will be as follows:
Rent: R20 400 pa
Food: R11 000 pa
Transport: R6 000 pa

These allowances will be paid on a monthly basis of R3 740 pm directly to the student's bank account. Health Sciences students form 2nd year onwards, will receive 1 month's additional allowances to cater for the 11 month academic cycle.

Living at home

Students living at home are awarded the following allowances:
Home allowance: R6 500 pa
Travel: R6 000 pa

The home allowance is NOT paid to the student. Instead, the allowance will reduce the EFC e.g. EFC R6 500 - R6 500 (home allowance) = new EFC of R0. For lower EFC's the student will require a smaller loan than offered.

Book Allowance

Note:
Where allowances are inadvertently paid to a student, the student will be required to re-pay the money to UCT.
