International applicants

Semester Study Abroad

Applications and requirements: Instructions

  1. If you plan to come to UCT through a partner university programme, contact your own International Office for the procedures, application forms and deadlines.

  2. If you plan to come to UCT through CIEE , InterStudy, Connect-123 or Arcadia consult their websites for further information.

  3. If you plan to come to UCT directly (as an 'individual'), complete a Semester Study Abroad application form (Form 6). Send the completed application form and other required documentation to:

    The International Academic Programmes Office (IAPO)
    Room 3.13, Kramer Building
    University of Cape Town
    Rondebosch
    7701
    South Africa

  4. The application form should be signed by the student and their parent or guardian, if they are under 21 years of age. Because the signature is required, the forms cannot be submitted electronically, but may be faxed, with the original to follow in the mail.
  5. Remember to enclose additional supporting documents, as listed above, with your application.

  6. The application forms ask students to pre-select courses. This is important, as some courses have specific prerequisites and admission may be limited. Although some courses may not be offered from time to time, a good idea of those available may be gained from the faculty handbooks, published on the UCT website. Please note that course offerings may change from time to time.
    You need to be aware that courses are coded to reflect the year of study, as well as the semester of offer. In general, you learn the following from the course code:

    Example of a course code: ELL104F

    ELL = department code = English department
    1** = 100-level course = first year level / introductory course
    F = first semester = February to July

  7. When applying for courses, bear in mind that you may need to have passed courses in the same, or a similar, discipline to be admitted to senior courses (200/300-level) courses in that discipline.

    Also note the semester of offer of a course, and select courses which will be offered during your planned period at UCT.

    F = first semester
    S = second semester
    W = whole year
    H = whole year
    Z = consult IAPO for details

  8. Processing of applications: Forms will be processed by IAPO through REMO (our central admissions office) and the faculties concerned with your application. IAPO will inform you in writing when your application has been successful. You will receive a letter of acceptance to study. This letter is used to apply for a study visa. You are responsible for applying for your own study permit. We will do our best to respond to your application as quickly as possible, so that you may begin the visa application process in good time.

  9. Fees invoice: Once you have been accepted to the programme, IAPO will send you a fees invoice detailing the cost of your study for the duration of your stay. This invoice will include information on fees payment instructions. All fees must be paid prior to registration, and we recommend that, to expedite matters, you attend to this before leaving your home country. Students on partner university programmes, or on centralised programmes, will be billed by their home institution or CIEE/InterStudy.

  10. Accepting the offer: It's important that you confirm your acceptance of the study offer made to you as soon as possible to secure your place. We also require a confirmation and deposit to secure housing for you. When you have confirmed your arrival date in South Africa, we will send you a pre-departure information package. This contains information regarding the Orientation programme and other services offered to Semester Study Abroad students by IAPO.
