ResNet: Support & facilities: Basic Settings

UserID or username and Password
- UserID below is your Campus student, staff or Third Party number
- UCT network password is the one that you use for most UCT network services e.g. email, Vula, Novell client authentication etc

MAC addresses are not required to be registered for a new computer to gain access the UCT network. When you connect your computer to the network, it is automatically allocated an IP number.

Enable DHCP to obtain an IP automatically
- Start | Settings | Network Connections
- Right-click Local Area Connections, then select Properties
- In the list of connection protocols, find Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties
- Use the radio button to enable Obtain IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically
- Click OK

This is what you enter when a dialog pops up when connecting to internet:
Username : wf\userID (Please take note of the slash) Password : UCT network password If an application requires domain as part of login, e.g. Java:
Username : userID Password : UCT network password Domain : wf.uct.ac.za -
These are the settings required by your application to connect over to the internet:
Host or Server : proxynet.uct.ac.za Port : 8080 -
- Open Skype
- Go to: Tools | Connection Options
The Skype Options dialog box opens. - Complete the following in the spaces provided:
- Do not change port number for incoming connections
- Tick the check box next to: Use port 80 and 443 as alternatives for incoming connections
- Click the dropdown arrow and select HTTPS
- Host: proxynet.uct.ac.za
- Port: 8080
- Tick the check box next to: Enable proxy authentication
- Username: wf\userID (userID = student, staff or third party number)
- Password: Type in your network password
- Click Save
- You have now set up Skype for use on ResNet
