UCT mourns Jakes Gerwel

Mourned: Prof Jakes Gerwel.
UCT is deeply saddened by the death of distinguished academic and politician Professor Jakes Gerwel (66) following a heart operation earlier this week.
Vice-Chancellor Dr Max Price said: "Professor Gerwel gave us an example of true leadership, by living to serve and build up others, and this remained his priority even as he took up all his distinguished posts and achievements.
"He embodied the spirit of social justice, courage and generosity that helped bring South Africa through our transition period."
UCT conferred an honorary Doctor of Literature on Gerwel in 1995.
Gerwel was a mentor and friend to many in the university community as well as in South Africa and beyond, Price said.
"The university mourns the loss of this remarkable life, which stands as a role model for all. We extend our sincere condolences to his family."
