UCT professor appointed to the World Bank
30 November 2012

Richard CallandWorld (Bank) recognition: Prof Richard Calland, together with two other board members, will adjudicate on World Bank matters pertaining to the refusal of document requests.

Professor Richard Calland, director of UCT's Democratic Governance Rights Unit (DGRU), has been appointed to the World Bank's Independent Access to Information Appeals Board.

The board, consisting of three persons, includes the former Scottish Information Commissioner, Kevin Dunion.

Individuals can submit appeals to this board when requests for documents made pursuant to the World Bank's (new, since 2010) Information Disclosure Policy are declined.

The DGRU is an applied research unit within UCT's Public Law Department. It is primarily concerned with the relationship between rights and governance.

Its work focuses on the intersection between public administration, with the challenge of public accountability, on the one hand, and the realisation of constitutionally-enshrined human rights on the other.

For more information visit the DRGU website.
