Heritage Society: Stuart Saunders hands over the reins
1 February 2011
At the UCT Heritage Society annual luncheon on 7 December 2010 at Rhodes Memorial, Dr Stuart Saunders, Founder and President of the Society, handed over the presidency baton to his successor, Emeritus Professor Francis Wilson.
About to turn 80 this year, former Vice-Chancellor Saunders has decided to relinquish his many, many attachments and commitments to UCT, even though he remains one of the university's stalwarts.
The Heritage Society is the brainchild of Dr Saunders, and is built around the value of long-term planning by creating an endowment for future generations of UCT students. Founded in the mid-1990s, the Society honours those alumni and friends who have left, or are planning to leave, a legacy in the form of a bequest or provision to the university in their wills.
Other functions hosted by the Society during 2010 included a lunch at the Balalaika Hotel in Johannesburg and a function at the Pinewood Retirement Village in Cape Town.
