UCTABA Bursary fund: First recipient graduates
2 February 2011
Sinazo Yolwa, the first beneficiary of the UCT Association of Black Alumni (UCTABA) Bursary Fund, graduated on 18 December, 2010 with a BCom degree majoring in accounting.
The journey to becoming one of UCT's 100 000 alumni has not been easy for Sinazo. "After many setbacks, including failing my major, I finally graduated in 2010," she says.
"To say that UCTABA has played a significant role in my obtaining my degree would be an understatement of great proportions. UCTABA is not just another sponsor, and to them I was not just another beneficiary. Their involvement has been on a personal level. I felt like I was part of a family – a family of past UCT graduates helping a sibling achieve her goals."
Before UCTABA assisted Sinazo she was on financial aid because her mother could not afford the tuition fees. With UCTABA's help Sinazo has achieved what many other young people, who are unable to overcome their financial constraints, cannot.
As a result Sinazo says: "I have committed myself to UCTABA, in order to help many others after me reach their dreams."
