Win some, lose some
7 May 2007

Early days: The UCT men’s A side has done well in the start to the 2007 hockey season – here’s UCT’s Zeno Rossouw (right) in action against Central - but the university’s B sides are finding the WPHU Grand Challenge a tough row to hoe.

The four UCT hockey teams had mixed fortunes in the Western Province Hockey Union’s top-tier Grand Challenge League over the weekend of 4-5 May. Both the men and women’s A teams registered victories, while their juniors continued their losing streak from the opening two matches.

The women’s A side humiliated Bellville 8-1 at UCT on Friday, 4 May, while the men side beat Durbanville 3-0 on the Saturday afternoon,

The win followed the men’s team 5-1 victory and the 4-4 drew against Victorians and Central respectively in their first matches. The woman’s team had drawn 2-2 against Constantiaberg before losing 1-2 to Central.

There was no improvement in the B sides, though, with the men’s team beaten 3-7 by Pinelands while the women’s side were trashed 0-5 by Somerset West.

But, as club administrator Noreen Wonnacott put it, these are still early days. There are 15 more games to be played and the rough waters for the B-sides could still pass.
