Employees Union looks back at banner year
11 May 2007

The strike by administrative and professional staff at UCT early this year took many people by surprise and had an enormous impact on the Employees Union (EU) profile.

The union not only achieved its objectives around the salary increase and the establishment of task teams to look into the university’s performance development plan, but its membership also increased, making the one-and-a-half day strike one of the union’s main achievements in the past year.

This was revealed when the EU held its annual general meeting (AGM) on 9 May.

“We are also better known at UCT as not the ‘Little Union That Can’, but as the union that does take action” said Andrea Plos, EU president, in her annual report.

At the AGM, the EU also elected a new committee, made up of George Du Plessis, Gary Gabriels, Linda Haynes, Hein Kleinbooi, Frans Mamabolo, Andrea Plos, Chris Tobler, Eugene Williams and Catherine Wynsculley.

Portfolios will be allocated shortly.
