Lipton Cup off to a steady start
28 August 2007

The 2007 Lipton Challenge Cup regatta started in Table Bay on Sunday, 26 August, with 12- to 15- knot northwesterly breezes and choppy seas whipping up ideal conditions for defending champions Greg Davis and Gareth Blackenburg. Aboard Theewater Sports Club's Dalys Insurance they dominated the 27-boat fleet from yacht clubs around South Africa in a tight tactical first race, says the Lipton Cup website.

Royal Cape Yacht Club's Greenlight, co-skippered by father and son duo Dave and Roger Hudson, just managed to get ahead on the last beat of the 12-mile course to take second place.

"It was tight,” said Davis, day one’s winning skipper on Dalys Insurance, who has also won eight previous Lipton Cups. “I can't say it was too close for comfort. We knew there was never going to be any comfort out there."

Team Lipton UCT, manned by William Norton (skipper), Steven Rhodes, Carla Dyer, Oliver Hobson and Constantin Hatzilambros, finished seventh on the leader board after the first day of racing. Windless conditions scuppered the second day’s racing, which was scheduled to start at noon.

The event, which is being hosted by Royal Cape Yacht Club in Table Bay, ends on Friday, 31 August.
