Young photographers show their wares
24 October 2007

Up-and-coming photographers from disadvantaged communities are having their work displayed at UCT’s Centre for African Studies Gallery from 22 to 31 October. The exhibition showcases pictures taken by seven students from the Intsebenziswano High School in Philippi and UNISA College.

The students took part in a photography workshop series early this year and their work revisits, with refreshingly personal perspectives, familiar social issues and locations around Cape Town.

This, together with extra lessons from the student-run organisation, Media School, has inspired the students to pursue careers in the media.

Bonginkosi Mfengu, (pictured above left) who is doing grade 9, said his involvement has also broadened his knowledge about the city as he had visited places like Cape Point.

Clare Butcher, a UCT student who ran the workshops and organised the exhibition, said it was a celebration of the students’ work and recognises the relationship between art and photography.
