UCT hosts USHEPiA strategic conference

Sharing knowledge: Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-Principal Professor Martin West welcomes delegates to the USHEPiA strategic conference.

The University Science, Humanities & Engineering Partnerships in Africa (USHEPiA) programme is hosting a strategic conference at UCT from 12 November to 14 November.

Delegates include eight vice-chancellors from Southern and East Africa. The objective of the conference is to review the activities of USHEPiA and measure its achievements since its establishment in 1996. The conference is funded by the Andrew W Mellon Foundation.

USHEPiA aims are to build institutional and human capacity, promote collaboration among established African researchers, and to generate and disseminate knowledge in African universities. The programme offers PhD and masters fellowships to staff members of the eight partner universities.

Since its inception, 64 full degree fellowships have been offered, To date, 25 USHEPiA PhD and six MSc fellows have graduated. Twenty-seven fellows are currently pursuing their doctorates.
