Humanities grad full of family ties

The Faculty of Humanities’ second round of graduations, held this morning, boasted a number of special guests, including Finance Minister Trevor Manuel, who was there to see son Govan graduate.
Govan, who finished his undergraduate degree, numbered among UCT’s social science graduates for the year.
The graduation also featured a few other family connections. Professor David Aschman, head of the Department of Physics, capped daughter Kate (above), who graduated with a first-class honours degree in criminal justice. And UCT sports administrator Peter Buckton was on hand to congratulate son Karl, who also completed his undergraduate degree this year. (See Monday Paper story.)
There were other honours as well. Associate Professor Jane Bennett, head of the African Gender Institute, received a Distinguished Teacher Award. And Associate Professor Anthony Black was awarded his PhD in economics (read Monday Paper story), while former head of the university’s International Academic Programmes Office, Dr Lesley Shackleton, received her PhD in gender studies.
