UCT opens doors to parents
4 February 2008

On tour: UCT's Derek Muller gives parents a tour during a Parents' Orientation.

Hundreds of parents are converging on UCT, not for any adult education, but for the annual Parents' Orientation to welcome parents of new first-year students.

About 1 200 parents of local students attended the first event on 2 February, with those from abroad expected tomorrow.

Judy Smit, head of events management, said a range of activities had been organised for them, including information stalls, talks and tours to familiarise them with the university and the environment their children will be experiencing over the next few years.

Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Njabulo S Ndebele, gave a welcome address at last Saturday's event, as well as Student Representative Council president, Thulani Madinginye, who spoke about student life and governance while registrar, Hugh Amoore, provided facts and figures about UCT.

The parents were also told about services that UCT offers, such as financial aid, health and transport.
