VC joins students in protest
29 February 2008

Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Njabulo S Ndebele, and SRC president Thulani Madinginye addressed students today at a gathering to protest the racist incident at the University of the Free State.

Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Njabulo S Ndebele, spoke at a student protest, organized by the Student Representative Council (SRC) today, adding his voice to the universal condemnation of the racist incident at the University of the Free State.

Standing on the Jameson steps, SRC president Thulani Madinginye voiced his support for the victims, before Ndebele addressed the assembled students.

"We are not going to allow racism to continue in our society," said Madinginye.

"This incident has affected not only South Africans, but many people around the world," said Ndebele. "I am here to lend my support and the support of the university to the stand against racism.

"We stand against racism anywhere in South Africa, anywhere in the world."

The protest follows the release of a video showing five black cleaners at a traditionally white men's residence on the campus being "initiated" by four white students.
