Designer students: Christopher Bisset and Julia Hundermark, front, took first prize in the 2008 Murray & Roberts Des Baker Student Architecture Design Competition, while Andre Malan and Dylan Pope, back, finished in third place.

Architecture students Christopher Bisset and Julia Hundermark beat 24 other entries to take first place in the 2008 Murray & Roberts Des Baker Student Architecture Design Competition.

Bisset and Hundermark received the awards at an awards function, attended by some 800 people, in Bloemfontein on 25 August. UCT classmates André Malan and Dylan Pope finished in third place, while first runners-up were Michael Cornwell and Phillip Baer of the University of the Witwatersrand.

The annual Des Baker Award was founded in 1983 in recognition of the late Des Baker, who was executive chairperson of Murray & Roberts until his death in 1982. The Murray & Roberts Des Baker Student Architecture Design Competition is open to all students of architecture at universities and technical universities in South Africa and the region.

The competition and awards evening is held in conjunction with the annual week long National Architecture Students Congress, hosted by the University of the Free State this year. The theme of the 2008 competition and congress was Architecture, the Theatre of Life - in a non-urban environment.

The competition aims to enrich the understanding and relationship between architects and contractors, and recognise and reward architecture students for their achievements.
