Top honour for geophysics research
13 February 2009

UCT made its presence felt at the recent American Association of Petroleum Geologist International Conference and Exhibition when student Sbonelo Ngcongo won the prestigious Ozan Sungurlu Memorial Award for Best International Student Poster.

The event was hosted in Cape Town last year while Ngcongo was doing his master's degree in petroleum geophysics at UCT.

The programme was a joint venture between the University of Houston and UCT.

The accolade came with a R5 000 prize.

Ngcongo researches on Amplitude Variation with Offset (AVO), a method used to find hydrocarbons(oil and gas) in the earth's subsurface. Ngcongo's work studies the negative impact of the tuning effect on the AVO analysis. The tuning effect can give the false hydrocarbons indications or hide the indications of hydrocarbons.
