Dean emeritus Prof JP van Niekerk gave the audience a breakneck introduction to medical education in Africa when he delivered the Faculty of Health Science's Van den Ende Memorial Lecture on 27 October. His talk, Cairo to Cape Town: Via yellow fevers and medical education, fittingly started off in Cairo with the founding of Africa's first medical school in 1827, then raced through a rogue's gallery of diseases, highlighting the role of countless medical educators. The lecture series is dedicated to Prof Marinus van den Ende (1912-1957), a doyen of medical education at UCT. Van Niekerk's talk was attended by a generational cross-section of the Van den Ende family, ranging from great-grandchild James to widow Joan, who turned 95 on 26 October.
