When UCT student Anelisa Makosa decided to donate blood while she was at high school five years ago, it was out of curiosity. But she then realised that her donation was important to save lives, and has continued. "Blood donation is a vital part of giving back to society," she explained. A second-year Bsc student, Makosa was one of scores of students and staff who turned up to answer the Western Province Transfusion Service's call for blood donors. The organisation is holding clinics at the Sports Centre on 4 and 5 August to make it convenient for its donors and to attract new ones. The clinic is hosted four times a year at UCT, and the number of university donors has been increasing over the years. All blood groups are "desperately" needed. In the picture, third-year psychology student, Augustine Musewe, was one of the first-time donors.
