UCT's objective to be accessible to disadvantaged students and, at the same time, maintain its reputation for excellence, received a boost when the Hospital Welfare and Muslim Educational Movement (HWMEM) handed the university a bursary cheque on 14 September. The R143 000 cheque, received by Vice-Chancellor Dr Max Price, is HWMEM's annual contribution towards UCT student coffers, an offering that goes back to the 1960s. Twenty-three students of all races and disciplines will benefit from the funds.
