Struggling students boosted

Click to enlargeUCT's objective to be accessible to disadvantaged students and, at the same time, maintain its reputation for excellence, received a boost when the Hospital Welfare and Muslim Educational Movement (HWMEM) handed the university a bursary cheque on 14 September. The R143 000 cheque, received by Vice-Chancellor Dr Max Price, is HWMEM's annual contribution towards UCT student coffers, an offering that goes back to the 1960s. Twenty-three students of all races and disciplines will benefit from the funds. In picture, Dr Price and Dr Jim McNamara, director of the Development and Alumni Department, accept the cheque from the movement's Mohamed Omar and Akbar Khalfe.
