Emeritus Professor Phillips taught in the Department of History at UCT for 40 years. He specializes in the history of universities and the history of health, disease and medicine. Among the books he has written are Plague, Pox and Pandemics: A History of Epidemics in South Africa; ‘Black October’: The Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918 in South Africa; In a Time of Plague: Memories of the Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918 in South Africa; The Cape Doctor: A Social History of the Cape Medical Profession; At the Heart of Healing: Groote Schuur Hospital 1938-2008; UCT 1918-1948: The Formative Years; and he is currently finishing UCT under Apartheid, vol. 1: 1948-1968.
