The Klaus-Jürgen Bathe Leadership Programme, launched at UCT by Vice-Chancellor Dr Max Price in November 2014, is an initiative aimed at producing graduates with outstanding leadership qualities and a strong sense of social justice, who will go on to play leading and significant roles in business, government, industry and civil society in South Africa and on the African continent. It was made possible through a generous donation of UCT alumnus and renowned engineering academic, Professor Klaus-Jürgen Bathe of MIT (USA). Twenty UCT students are currently funded; 7 have already graduated.
The Programme is open to undergraduate students in all 6 Faculties of UCT. The scholarships are offered for 2 years. Selected scholars will receive full funding intended to cover tuition fees, accommodation and living expenses. They will be expected to take the normal courses of their degree programmes, plus additional electives intended to develop leadership attributes. In the second year of the fellowship, the scholars are required to spend up to 6 weeks attached to approved organizations in South Africa, Germany or the USA, learning how good leadership plays an important role in the successful running of public institutions, government departments, national agencies, business enterprises and other key organizations.
The Call for Applications for 2018 admission is now open. The application form is available on the Programme website. Students should carefully take note of all eligibility requirements before applying. The closing date is 31 August 2017. Late applications will not be accepted.
