The Distinguished Teacher Award (DTA) is the highest accolade given to teaching staff at all levels within the university and recognises excellent teaching. Through the award UCT acknowledges the primary place of teaching and learning in the university's work.
A maximum of four nominees are recommended by the DTA selection committee, based on nominations received by students and staff. The recipients of the award are announced formally during faculty graduation ceremonies in December.

Exceptional teachers who clearly stand out above the other nominees are also honoured with the Vice-Chancellor's Medal. This form of recognition is made by the DTA selection committee, at their discretion, and is awarded from time to time to one of the four DTA recipients.
