Overview

Welcome from the Director

16th annual IEASA conference in 2012. The theme of the conference is Promoting Higher Education Internationalisation through
International Research Collaborations, Partnerships and Innovative Teaching.
On behalf of the University of Cape Town, it is my honour and pleasure to welcome you to UCT. Whether you are an international student, a postdoctoral Fellow, an academic or a visitor, the International Academic Programmes Office (IAPO) is there to help make your arrival and stay at UCT as hassle-free as possible with respect to issues pertaining to your immigration status and other requirements.

UCT defines itself as an international university. Some of the essential elements of such a university are the global competitiveness in the range of academic programmes offered and the interaction with global academic communities. UCT takes pride in the quality of its comprehensive undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, its excellent research track record and the highest number of international students at any South African university. UCT graduates are highly regarded by employers anywhere in the world. It is the only university that has consistently enjoyed the highest academic ranking in South Africa and Africa. You should rest assured, therefore, that the education and, indeed, any other form of interaction you will have while at UCT is comparable to that which you can get at any top university in the world.

UCT has a diverse student and staff population from over 100 nationalities. We hope you will take advantage of this diversity to enrich your lives. UCT has a student enrolment of close to 23,000 and of these over 4,500 are international students, the majority of whom come from countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) while almost 1,000 per year are Semester Study Abroad students. The International Office alone hosts over 100 official visitors and delegations a year as part of promoting its global partnerships and networks. Many more visitors visit the different parts of the universities directly.

You are very welcome.
