UCTABA 2010 Homecoming Bash
2 February 2011

Business leadersIn September the UCT Association of Black Alumni (UCTABA) hosted a two-day Homecoming 2010 event for their members, which was well-supported by alumni from around the country. Main sponsor of the weekend was MTN, whose generosity was greatly appreciated.

The programme started off on Thursday, 23 September with a cocktail party hosted by the US Consulate in Bishopscourt, where Vice-Chancellor, Dr Max Price, extended a warm welcome to everyone.

Friday began with registration followed by a campus tour and a presentation by Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof Thandabantu Nhlapo, during which he provided an update on the transformation progress at UCT.

After lunch, delegates were treated to a keynote address by guest speaker, Miss Chris-Tia Donaldson, founding President of the Harvard Black Alumni Association, before the more formal UCTABA annual general meeting got into full swing. Miss Donaldson complimented UCTABA on their progress to date and encouraged them to continue on their present path.

Friday evening, spent at a concert at the South African College of Music on lower campus, proved to be a special highlight of the weekend, but may have been a ploy to unsettle some of the competitors in the next morning's sporting events. The weekend closed off with a gala dinner at Smuts Hall on upper campus on Saturday evening, where National Co-ordinator, Mr Justice Luthuli, and Miss Chris-Tia Donaldson spoke to participants about the importance of maintaining strong ties with their alma mater.

All the sponsors, whose contributions ensured a successful event, received words of appre ciation. In addition to the main sponsors, MTN, support was also received from the Consulate General of the United States of America; SAA; UCTABA Western Cape Home - coming Committee; UCTABA National Steering Committee; Mr Mutle Mogase; Mr Sandile Zungu; Mr Sakhi Dumakhude; UCT Development and Alumni Department; and SAVCIO Holdings.
