In keeping with its central role in the academic life of the university, the Chancellor Oppenheimer Library - UCT's main library - lies at the heart of Upper Campus. The main library and its nine branch libraries house collections made up of over 1.2 million print volumes, including 28 300 print journal titles, and offer access to 63 000 e-journals and 177 electronic research databases.
The main library's new Research Wing on six floors offers a quiet haven and more focused services to senior postgraduates and researchers. It houses specialised collections and the Research Commons, with high-end technology for research and writing.
The undergraduate areas have many new group study spaces as well as the Knowledge Commons, a well-equipped support facility.
The branch libraries are situated on the various UCT campuses, close to the academic departments they serve. They include the Health Sciences Library, opposite Groote Schuur Hospital; the Brand van Zyl Law Library, on Middle Campus; the W.H. Bell Music Library, and the African Studies Library, which houses a world-renowned collection of Africana.
New digital collection
The William and Yvonne Jacobson Digital Africana Program at UCT - a collaborative project with Stanford University Libraries to share digital African content: the digitisation of maps from the UCT collections has been funded in part by a grant from The William and Yvonne Jacobson Digital Africana Program. It is part of a collaborative project with Stanford University Libraries to share digital African content to the benefit of both institutions and to scholarship in general.
