Loop Systems at UCT

The Disability Service has introduced technology in lecture venues around the university to aid those with hearing disabilities.

Loop systems are electromagnetic induction loops that are installed in venues to amplify the sound from a microphone, and broadcast it directly to a person’s hearing aid.

Most hearing aids have different programmes to allow for different listening environments, and one of these programmes is referred to as the "t-coil" setting. This is the setting that would be needed in order to receive the direct signal from the loop.

It is not always practical to loop an entire venue when it is very large, so in some cases the university has elected to loop only a section of the venue. This will be clearly indicated by appropriate signage.

If you wear a hearing aid but find that you are unable to access the loop in any of the venues listed below, please SMS or email the Disability Service immediately, so they can take the necessary steps to rectify the problem.

4. Maths Building Lecture Theatre (The first 6 front rows)
5. Menzies Lecture Theatre 9 (The entire lecture theatre is looped)
