Chemical spill
All laboratories using chemicals must have in place material safety data sheets. These will contain information on decontamination procedures and the correct procedure to follow in the event of a spill.
The following actions must be taken when personnel have been contaminated by a hazardous chemical spill:
Determine
- What has happened;
- The nature of the spill;
- The chemical involved - obtain material safety data sheets.
Action
- If not sure, isolate the area.
- Treat any casualties.
- Inform Campus Protection immediately on 021 650 2222 / 3.
- Inform the building emergency controller.
- Inform the Health and Safety Manager on 021 650 3552 / 2246 / 3873 / 2660, speed dial to cell phone 8016 or 8056.
Containing and cleaning a chemical spill
- Follow the instructions given on material safety data sheets (MSDS).
- Make sure First Aid is given to any patients immediately.
- Cordon the area and keep it clear.
- The clean-up procedure will be guided by the instructions on the MSDS.
- If you are unsure of the procedure then the area should be kept clear.
