What do I do if somebody is injured in my building?

* It is important to find out if the person has medical aid, as this cost is for the person's own expense, and they might not be able to afford an expensive ambulance.
Which forms do I complete when somebody is injured in my building?

- WCL2 form obtainable from SHE Office 650 2246.
- Submit the annexure 1 form . (This should be in your Health and Safety File and is also obtainable from the SHE Office. Tel: 021 650 2246 / 3552.
- Student
- Submit the annexure 1 form for unsafe conditions.
- Contractor
- Submit the annexure 1 form for unsafe conditions.
What do I do if there is a fire in my building?
- Try to extinguish the fire. Do not endanger your life!
- Alert others in the building.
- Inform security. Tel: 021 650 2222 / 3.
- Decide on the appropriate action.
How do I report any unsafe condition?
- Report this to the maintenance call centre Tel: 021 650 4321 / 2 and get a reference number. If it is considered very serious then inform the SHE office with the reference number Tel: 021 650 2246 or 021 650 2660.
Where do I get all the forms that need to be completed?
Who is responsible for looking after first aid kits in the buildings?
- It is the responsibility of all heads of department to make sure that their staff have access to first aid treatment and that trained first aiders are available in their areas. Please contact the SHE office for a checklist of what should be in a first aid kit in your workplace, or view the checklist here.
How would I know where all the emergency equipment can be found in my area?
- Contact the SHE office to be orientated on the emergency equipment in your area. Tel: 021 650 2660 or 021 650 2246.
How do I find out how to use an extinguisher?
- Contact the UCT SHE officer, Mr Barry Platen, to get some training. Tel: 021 650 2660.
Where would I get a list of all the fire equipment in my area?

How would I get access to the Occupational Health and Safety Act?
Who looks after the signs in the building?
- The SHE representative. The SHE Officer, Mr Barry Platen. must be informed of any signage that is required. Tel: 021 650 2660.
What incidents must be reported to the SHE department?
- Any incident where there is an injury to a person, or injury-threatening damage to a building.
Who looks after the fire alarms in the building?
- The maintenance department SHE representatives have to check these on a regular basis. The SHE office will assist you.
Whose function is it to check on escape routes in the buildings?
- The SHE representative should delegate this task to the evacuation marshals.
What is the difference between a SHE representative and an evacuation marshal?
- The SHE representatives are responsible for making sure that the areas that they have been appointed to are safe. The evacuation marshals are responsible for assisting in an evacuation.
Who is responsible for contractors in the building?
- The SHE representative is responsible for making sure that they comply with the safety standards and has the authority to stop any unsafe work.
What is required when a Worker's Compensation claim is made?
- A certified copy of the person's identity document
- A copy of a completed WCL2 form
- Any doctor's reports
- Any medical accounts
It is recommended that all these documents are sent to the SHE representative immediately.
What is covered by Worker's Compensation?
- Only medical expenses are covered by medical aid. Expenses are paid directly to the doctor or therapist.
Who managers the Worker's Compensation claims at UCT?
How long does it take for a claim to be processed?
- This process can take up to three years.
How soon must a claim be lodged?
- It is required that any claims be submitted within seven days.
Who decides that a case should be covered by Worker's Compensation?
- The Compensation Commissioner decides if a case will be covered by Worker's Compensation. The SHE office can give advice based on previous experiences, but they cannot decide whether a case will be covered.
Will I get covered by Worker's Compensation if I get injured whilst I am on my way to work or when I am going home?
- The legislation says that people are only covered if they are injured whilst they are performing work.
If I am injured on duty and it was due to my own negligence will I be covered by Worker's Compensation?
- Yes, you still have a right to compensation. This is not a decision for your line manager or the SHE office. All information and evidence is sent to the Worker's Compensation Commissioner for a decision.
Who can I contact to enquire about a compensation case or if I have any queries about Worker's Compensation?
Who is responsible for managing emergencies at the university and who decides what is an emergency?
- The risk services management team co-ordinates all emergencies on the university campuses. The risk services team consists of the following people:
- the risk services manager;
- the SHE manager;
- the security manager;
- the traffic manager.
(People from other disciplines are seconded to this team for their expertise.)
If you are unsure that a situation is an emergency, then you are advised to contact the security control room. They will immediately send support to your area and contact a member of the risk services team who is on standby, who will advise them on the appropriate action to take.
