Training: Fire and emergency evacuation

Don't panic ...

1. Raise the alarm, inform your colleagues and the safety officer.
2. Assess the situation and decide what type of action to take. If it is a fire, then determine:
• the location of the fire
• what is burning
• how serious it is
3. Use the nearest fire extinguisher to try and extinguish the fire as long as your safety is not compromised.
4. Contact CPS and the fire department if the fire cannot be extinguished.
5. Evacuate the building via the nearest, safest emergency exit.
6. If it is a bomb threat, get as much information as possible:
• Contact CPS immediately and start the evacuation process.
7. Staff and students should gather at a safe waiting area where roll-call will be taken and the emergency controller advised if there is anyone missing. Important! No one is allowed to leave until the roll-call is done and then only if a responsible person is notified.
8. The Safety, Health and Environment representative (emergency controller) will ensure that all rooms in the building have been evacuated only if this does not compromise their safety.
9. When evacuating, people should:
• keep to the left when going down stairs and passages;
• close all doors and windows in event of a fire (to prevent the spread of the fire)
• open all doors and windows in event of a bomb threat (to prevent excessive shrapnel)
10. Only if it is safe and there is time to do so:
• save your work and shut down your computer
• remove your valuables from your office
11. All staff are required to assist with evacuating children, the disabled and those suffering temporary disabling injuries.
12. The emergency controller will meet the emergency personnel to brief them on the emergency.
13. The emergency controller will hand over to the emergency services when they arrive, and will await further instructions.

Important! When instructed to evacuate do not delay! Your safety is of utmost importance.
