Entrance scholarships

As the name suggests, entrance scholarships are only available to first-time entering students.

Each year, UCT distributes over R8 million in scholarships to school-leavers who are coming to study at the university for the first time. Preference is given to South African students. The awards range in value, normally from R20 000 to R40 000.

About scholarships awarded at UCT:

• Scholarship awards are made using information provided in your application for admission and academic results.
• Entrance (Open) Scholarships are awarded on the basis of the school leaving examination and/or NBT results.
• Entrance (Equity) Scholarships made for equity purposes take into account previous academic achievement, NBT tests and the University’s commitment to redress the consequences of discrimination. Each faculty decides the target group(s) for its equity awards.

Entrance Scholarship General Conditions:

• Unless stated otherwise, entrance scholarships are valued at R20 000, and you need not apply for one
• Entrance scholarships are awarded for one year only, and only if you are entering university for the first time except for BAS and Performing & Creative Arts students, are guaranteed to applicants, who register, and attain the published thresholds
• Entrance scholarships are restricted to South African citizens and permanent residents
• An entrance scholarship will be withdrawn entirely if, as a recipient, you cancel your registration before writing mid-year examinations (should you cancel registration after writing the mid-year exams you will receive half the scholarship value)
• Entrance scholarships are valid only for the year for which the offer was made; offers of entrance scholarships are not deferred

Ten Entrance Scholarships will be allocated competitively and on academic merit to applicants placed in one of the Faculty’s extended programmes. This will be done on the recommendation of the programme convenor and the Faculty scholarship sub-committee, and will be decided by the Dean.

Redress	Applicants with a minimum FPS of 480 and ≥80% for Mathematics in the final NSC examinations. Full-fee scholarship (R40,000;FPS ≥560), half-fee scholarship (R20,000;FPS 530-559), quarter-fee scholarship (R10,000;FPS 480-499)
