Accessibility

Overview

UCT's upper campus is nestled on the slopes of Table Mountain. The buildings are on multiple levels and this poses difficulties with access. Many of the older buildings are national monuments whose basic structure cannot easily be altered.

Nevertheless, the university plans to improve its accessibility to people with disabilities. Already many of the buildings are fitted with ramps, some toilets are adapted for people with disabilities and lifts serve many of the buildings.

The Disability Service has developed basic specifications on physical access which must be adhered to during any construction or alteration of the university built environment.

See the Physical Access and the UCT Built Environment booklet, the Upper Campus wheelchair access and amenities guide, and the wheelchair access map of Upper Campus.

The booklet and access map are also available from the Disability Service reception, Room 4.03, Steve Biko Students Union, Upper Campus, UCT.
