Jameson Hall stage access
Students and staff using wheelchairs attending graduations can access the stage in Jameson Hall in a dignified manner with an installation of a lift.
Previously many students using wheelchairs chose to graduate in absentia rather than be capped in front of the stage. Students are now able to access the stage with their peers.
As well as making the stage accessible for graduating students, the lift also makes the stage accessible for staff or visitors using wheelchairs attending ceremonies or presentations.
Due to the nature of the lift as well as concerns related to the preservation of the aesthetics of Jameson hall, the lift is not a standard access device for people with disabilities. It therefore does not provide 'independent' access to the stage but rather 'dignified' access.
It is used for ceremonies and other planned functions only and is operated in accordance with strict guidelines set out by UCT's Health and Safety Officer.
