Emergencies
ICTS emergencies
IT Crash
Data Centres at Bremner and Upper Campus
- There are documented emergency plans for SAP R3, file servers and the mail servers. These plans and procedures are held by ICTS and all technical staff are familiar with these procedures. Standby ICTS staff will follow the step-by-step shutdown procedures for each machine and system in the event of an emergency situation.
- Administration staff (HR, payroll, creditors, ACB, etc.) must complete runs before shutdowns take place.
- Emergency backups must be made before shutdowns take place.
- Systems software and emergency procedures are kept in a safe under Mr Andre le Roux's supervision.
- In the event of a short-term power failure, air-conditioner failure or strike action, a full emergency shutdown is not required.
- In the event of a fire situation, accident or bomb threat which is expected to last for more than one full day, the full emergency procedure needs to be applied.
UCT PABX (Telephone system)
- The UCT PABX's emergency plans are included in the ICTS emergency plan.
- Any problems on the UCT PABX are automatically displayed on the switchboard consoles for an operator to respond to.
- Switchboard operators have a bomb threat checklist that will assist them in collecting the critical information needed in the event of a bomb threat.
- In the event of a power failure, the system automatically switches over to the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS).
ICTS emergency plan
After hours
Fire, bomb, flood and accident: An alarm will activate or CPS will receive a print out on the BMS printer after hours. The instructions are to contact Randolph Thompson.
If the emergency lasts more than a day the emergency plan will fall into action and shutdown procedures will start.
The following emergency numbers are available.
| Randolph Thompson | 021 650 3025 | (cell) 082 720 9169 |
| Andre le Roux | 021 650 4722 | (cell) 076 213 8394 |
During working hours
- Fire, flood, power or air-conditioner failure will print out an alarm message on the maintenance BMS printer, after which the maintenance person will contact CPS and Mr Thompson, or the numbers supplied on the printout.
- Again, depending on the emergency, the ICTS emergency plan will come into effect.
- Power failure will cause the systems to switch over automatically to the UPS, which allows ICTS 45 minutes to put the emergency shutdown procedure into action. If the power is not going to be restored within a day, the emergency plan procedures will take place.
- Air-conditioner failure will only prompt the ICTS department to shut down a few of the less important machines to keep the temperature low.
- If strike action takes place, calling for the ICTS emergency plan will depend on whether access into the Computer Science department is limited for more than a day.
- Fire, bomb, strike action, flood and accident will only prompt evacuation of the building.
