UCT has exchange agreements with a number of universities across the world. These mean that students can apply to spend a period of time (usually a semester) at one of these institutions without paying tuition fees. Sometimes we are also able to offer a scholarship to cover some or all of the travel or living costs. We prioritise postgraduates for these exchanges.

The International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU)

The International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) is a network of 11 international research-intensive universities from nine countries across the globe. One of IARU’s flagship activities is the Global Summer Program; each member university puts forward one or more modules for which students from IARU universities may apply. Some fully funded schoalrships to attend these programmes are available to UCT postgrads. IARU universities:

Yale/Fox Fellowship

The Yale/Fox Fellowship is a prestigious two-way international exchange programme between the University of Cape Town and Yale University. It supports outstanding postgraduates with demonstrated leadership potential from the world’s finest educational institutions to spend an academic year at Yale University pursuing independent research in one of a number of fields, from economics to politics and law.

University of California

UCT has an exchange agreement with the University of California (UC), USA, in which students can choose to spend a semester at any of the UC campuses (apart from the medical campus) without paying tuition fees.

Vrije University Amsterdam: School of Economics

The Vrije University Amsterdam (VUA) offers scholarships to postgraduates in the School of Economics at UCT to spend either a full semester or to attend the short SKILL programme at VUA.

Erasmus+

The Erasmus + programme aims to enhance quality in higher education through academic cooperation between the European Union and the rest of the world. UCT is involved in several successful Erasmus + partnerships that offer mobility opportunities to postgraduates and staff.
