This section is a comprehensive resource for researchers across all career stages seeking research funding. It encompasses funding opportunities and application guides for key funding bodies to streamline the process of accessing funding. It also includes contacts and useful links pertaining to this stage of the research project lifecycle.
Research funding opportunities
Researchers can seek funding in three ways:
- Internal funding: apply for UCT research budgets
- External funding (A): respond to a competitive funding call by national and international funding bodies; nominations and awards also fall into this category
- External funding (B): negotiate directly with a funder; industry-sponsored research usually falls into this category
For latest funding opportunities, browse and subscribe to our bi-weekly newsletter:
Funding opportunities for UCT researchers by source:
Internal UCT research funding
Internal research funding comes from the university’s general operating budget, managed by sub-committees of the UCT Research Committee (URC) and through available discretionary funds. These funds support research activities such as capacity building, equipment, travel, training and conferences. Some opportunities are listed below.
For more details on internal funding opportunities at UCT visit our page Internal funding. Unless stated otherwise, email queries to our Research Support Services (RSS).
Research and research capacity building
- Block grants fund general research activities. Faculty research committees (FRCs) manage and distribute the annual URC macro block grants.
- Researcher development grants fund early-career academics or those who have not yet established themselves as independent researchers. This is limited to members of the Emerging Researcher Programme (ERP).
- Research publication grants are awards to support publication in open access journals and associated page charges.
- Start-up grants help initiate new staff members’ research at UCT.
Research equipment
Research equipment grants fund large equipment (R150k to R1m) not covered by faculty equipment committees (FECs). Apply through your FEC. The FEC representatives can assist with the process and provide more details.
Send queries to robyn.udemans@uct.ac.za.
Travel, training and conferences
- Conference travel grants enable recipients to present their research at conferences or meetings.
- Grants for hosting a conference provide funding to assist departments arranging research conferences and symposia.
- Short research visit (SRV) and short research course grants provide funding to enhance research endeavours by supporting exchanges or course attendance.
- Visiting scholars fund (VSF) and visiting lecturers fund (VLF) provide grants to bring academics, scholars and visiting lecturers to UCT from outside of Africa.
Faculties may make funding available for research-related activities. Review faculty-specific info-mailers and announcements to learn more about these opportunities.
- Building Research Active Academic Staff (BRAAS) grants* support new and emerging academic staff to develop their research capacity by providing either a master’s or doctoral bursary.
- Enabling Grant Seeker Excellence awards (EGSE) encourage researchers affiliated with UCT to submit applications to external funders.
- Junior Research Fellow (JRF) awards* are three-year fellowships awarded to URC-accredited research groupings to fund a junior research fellow.
- Seed awards support newly NRF-rated researchers and researchers who have maintained or improved their NRF rating.
*competitive grant and subject to availability of budget

Industry funding for research work and contracts
Industry-funded research aims to advance both the investigator’s work and the funder’s commercial interests. Funding is exchanged for specific research deliverables, with results and intellectual property often acquired by the funder. Projects usually start through direct outreach from the industry sponsor or the researcher, often facilitated by existing connections or industry-engagement organisations.
Note: Industry-funded contract research still follows UCT’s internal approval process via UCT’s electronic Research Administration (eRA) system using the Contracts Stage Approval process.

Routine analytical or material testing research service activities
UCT leads in industry collaboration and technology transfer. Companies can access UCT’s expertise and equipment through fee-for-service agreements managed by UCT's Research Contracts & Innovation (RC&I) office.
RC&I’s legal advisors work with faculty finance offices, researchers and departments to negotiate and finalise research contracts.
Analytical services agreements cover routine analyses or tests, with cost recovery pre-approved by faculty and vetted by faculty finance to ensure full cost recovery. Once the pricing template is approved, these projects do not need pre-award recording in the UCT electronic Research Administration (eRA) system.
RC&I sends a quotation and standard terms to the client. The contract is legally binding when the client signs the quotation and terms. Send the quotation and terms documents to Research Contracts & Innovation (RC&I) for processing.
